FAQ: TEX HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR
1. What is the Mission Statement of the Choir Program?
The “Tex” Hill Middle School Choral Program will actively work to create a quality musical experience, to strive for excellence in both individual and group efforts, to develop a sense of community among its members, to foster the love of vocal music, and to share that appreciation with its audiences.
2. What kind of time commitment is expected of my student before and after school?
The time commitment is directly correlated with which choir your student belongs to. Each choir has a list required dates that consist of rehearsals and performances before and after school. These are considered co-curricular and are a part of the student’s grade. Most choirs participate in four to five concerts a year and seven to eight outside of school rehearsals. However, the advanced choirs may be required to attend more depending on the season. All dates are communicated in a timely manner to avoid any last minute conflicts.
3. What kind of cost is involved?
All students must pay a registration fee which covers their t-shirt, formal uniform, choir binder, and music throughout the year. The fee varies from $25-$50 depending on the choir class. Financial assistance is available to students in extreme situations.
4. What musical concepts will my students be learning?
As a choir member, students will learn healthy vocal production as well as music theory, sightreading, and ear training skills. Attention to blend, balance, and tone within the choir is also addressed.
5. What competitions are available to my student?
Students in choir have the opportunity to compete for solos and other special parts within their class period. Advanced choir members will participate in the All-Region Choir Auditions and the UIL Concert and Sightreading Competition. The group competitions are required as part of the class curriculum, but the individual competitions are considered optional.
6. How are grades determined?
Final grades in choir will be determined by the following percentages:

8. What if my child is not a “good singer”?
EVERY student no matter the ability is welcome to join choir. They can be taught to match pitch and sing well. Students in choir do not have to perform solos if they are not comfortable.
9. Can my child join choir in the seventh and eighth grade?
Absolutely! Students may join choir at any level. However, girls who join choir in the 8th grade may not be placed in the Varsity Choir without an audition with Mrs. Graham.
